In June 2020, Foxx confirmed that he’d been physically training for his role as Tyson. During an Instagram Live conversation with producer Mark Birnbaum, Foxx re-told the same first-meeting story that he’s discussed over the years, and stated that “the real ball” is indeed rolling. The actor also shared exclusive photos of his upper body transformation, the result of an every-other-day regiment involving 60 pull-ups, 60 dips, and 100 push-ups. Foxx joked about his lack of calf muscle, and implied that prosthetics would be needed to complement his real-life training. Instead, Mike is an exhausting and sometimes illuminating trawl through his personal trials, beginning with a Brooklyn childhood tinged with violence, petty crime and, er, pigeons. When a kid from the ’hood rips the head off one of young Mike’s feathered friends, he goes feral. “That’s the day I became a boxer,” he says as he relentlessly beats up the perpetrator. Until then, he was the kid with the high-pitched voice and lisp who got picked on.
If getting a face tattoo isn’t strange enough, Tyson also has an original tattoo of Chinese leader Mao Zedong on his right arm. For those whose history is a little shabby, Mao Zedong was the founder of the People’s Republic of China. He remains a controversial figure, with the majority of Chinese citizens believing him a great leader for ending decades of civil war and reuniting the country as one, while the rest of the world sees him as a dictator whose rule resulted in the deaths of close to 80 million people through his policies.
Due to his conviction, Tyson was required to register as a Tier II sex offender under federal law. Tyson has continued to maintain his innocence. In 1992, Erinn Cosby, the daughter of comedian and actor Bill Cosby, publicly accused Tyson of sexually assaulting her in 1989, although no criminal charges were ever sought.
Tyson marries his pregnant girlfriend, actress Robin Givens. The event is followed by the sad news of Jacobs’ death due to leukemia. Cayton takes on the job of managing Tyson. Don King seeks Tyson with an offer to manage his career. Tyson declines, but decided to hire King as his new promoter instead. A battle of words flies between King, Givens, and Cayton in the media, as they accuse each other of swindling Tyson.
Tyson’s new, mellowed state has finally allowed him to get real about his decision to get the tattoo. It boils down to caprice that reflects his drug-addled period. In an interview from 2012, posted on YouTube, Tyson states that he was intending to get “a bunch of hearts and stuff” on his face because he wanted to be known as “The Man of Hearts.” Tyson’s tattoo artist, Victor Perez, straight-up refused, and instead drafted some tribal patterns. “I just thought it was so hot,” Tyson says. “I would be in these dens, these clubs and strip places sometimes and all the girls said ‘oh you are very exotic, where are you from?'”
Mike Tyson, unfortunately, was not present at his Phoenix, Arizona home when the incident occurred. Upon learning of the situation while in Las Vegas, he promptly flew back to Phoenix to face this unimaginable ordeal. And now, years after her passing, Tyson in a heartwarming gesture, chose to get a tattoo of her face on his chest. The tattoo artist Noah Bissi did an impressive job at bringing the late Exodus to life once again through his art. He even shared the video of the process on his Instagram account.
